Abstract

Microplastics are an emerging contaminant increasingly found in river waters, particularly in urban areas with high anthropogenic activity. The Kalimas River extendsapproximately 12 km from the Ngagel district gate to the Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya Cityand is an urban river that traverses residential, commercial, market, and port areas, making itsusceptible to receiving microplastic inputs from various sources. This study aims to analyzethe presence, abundance, and characteristics of microplastics in the water and sediment of theKalimas River from upstream to downstream. The study was conducted by collecting water and sediment samples at five pointsrepresenting the upstream, midstream, and downstream segments of the river under two dry-day and two rainy-day conditions. The analysis included sample preparation, density separationusing NaCl, organic matter degradation through the Wet Peroxide Oxidation (WPO) method, and microplastic sorting. The characteristics of microplastics were identified using a stereomicroscope based on particle shape, color, and size. Microplastic polymer types were identifiedthrough the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) test. The resulting data were thenanalyzed to examine differences in abundance based on location, media, and weather conditions. The observation results indicate that microplastics were found at all sampling points inboth water and sediment media, with abundance tending to be higher under rainy-day conditionsthan dry-day conditions. On rainy days, the abundance in water ranged from 55.3 to 100.2particles/L and in sediment from 1,120 to 3,120 particles/kg, whereas on dry days the valueswere lower at 20.7 to 58.9 particles/L in water and 720 to 2,430 particles/kg in sediment. Thecharacteristics of microplastics were dominated by fiber-shaped particles with transparent color, and the FTIR analysis identified five polymer types, namely Polypropylene (PP), Polyethylene(PE), Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), Nylon 6 (Polycaprolactam), and Polyurethane (PU),with PP as the dominant polymer. The distribution pattern that increases toward the downstreamsegment confirms the role of the Kalimas River as a transport corridor for microplastics fromland to coastal areas.
