Abstract

The reliability of the electrical system is a crucial factor in supporting production activities at PT Kaltim Parna Industri (KPI). The planned addition of an LCO2 load and a 1 x 15 MW Gas Turbine Generator (GTG) will alter the electrical system configuration, potentially causing issues with the existing protection system coordination. This study aims to analyze the protection system design of the new plant and re-optimize the overcurrent protection coordination (overcurrent relay and ground fault relay) within the PT KPI electrical system following these additions. The research was conducted through comprehensive electrical system analysis, which included load flow and short circuit simulations using power system simulation software. The analysis results served as a reference for determining relay setting parameters and protection coordination, which were visualized and evaluated using Time-Current Characteristic (TCC) curve plots. The evaluation of the existing system revealed potential sympathetic tripping and false tripping due to inappropriate pickup limits and Coordination Time Interval (CTI) margins that did not comply with the standards. Following the re-setting process, the tripping time sequence between relays was optimally coordinated, achieving a CTI margin of 0.2 - 0.4 seconds in accordance with the IEEE 242-2001 standard. In addition to updating the relay settings, this study also recommends retrofitting the capacity of the Current Transformers (CT) and Molded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCB) at several load points in accordance with the IEEE 242-2001 standard. These adjustments ensure the restoration of the selectivity and reliability of the protection system, allowing industrial operational continuity to run safely and efficiently.
