Abstract

Gili Ketapang Island is a small island located in the northern part of Probolinggo Regency with highly dynamic shoreline changes driven by abrasion and accretion processes. This study aims to extract shorelines, analyze their spatial and temporal changes, and evaluate the accuracy of the extraction results in Gili Ketapang Island for the period 2020–2025. Shoreline extraction was performed using the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) method with a threshold value of 0 applied to six Sentinel-2 Level-2A images. Image acquisition dates were determined based on tidal analysis using the Least Square method applied to tidal prediction data from BIG Probolinggo Station, yielding a Formzahl number of 1.1491 (mixed tide prevailing semidiurnal type) and six selected dates with a mean tidal elevation of 76.2 cm. The shoreline extracted for each year represents an instantaneous condition captured by a single selected image, thus reflecting the shoreline position at a specific acquisition date rather than an average condition throughout the year. Shoreline change analysis was conducted using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) with Net Shoreline Movement (NSM), End Point Rate (EPR), and Shoreline Change Envelope (SCE) parameters, while validation was performed using 548 GNSS RTK measurement points against a reference shoreline derived from Canny Edge Detection. Analysis of 102 valid transects revealed a dominance of abrasion at 57.8%, with mean values of NSM −4.265 m, EPR −0.859 m/year, and SCE 13.100 m. The most significant abrasion was concentrated at the western tip and southern side of the island, while accretion was identified on the eastern side and parts of the northern side. Validation yielded an RMSE value of 7.708 m for the Wet Layer, which is below the 10 m threshold, indicating that the extraction results are valid.
