Abstract

Praktik Kerja Lapangan (PKL) ini dilaksanakan di PT Clariant Adsorbents Indonesia dengan tujuan mempelajari proses produksi bleaching earth, sistem pengendalian mutu, serta melakukan evaluasi kinerja Rotary Dryer (RD) sebagai salah satu peralatan utama dalam proses pengeringan. Bleaching earth merupakan adsorben berbasis bentonit teraktivasi asam yang digunakan untuk menghilangkan pengotor, pigmen, dan senyawa penyebab warna pada minyak nabati. Proses produksinya meliputi persiapan slurry, aktivasi menggunakan asam sulfat, filtrasi, pencucian, pengeringan, penggilingan, hingga pengemasan yang seluruhnya dikendalikan melalui pengujian quality control untuk menjamin mutu produk. Evaluasi kinerja Rotary Dryer dilakukan dengan membandingkan efisiensi aktual terhadap efisiensi teoritis berdasarkan perhitungan neraca massa dan neraca energi. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa efisiensi aktual pengering berkisar 56,40–60,25%, sedangkan efisiensi teoritis mencapai 92,84%. Perbedaan tersebut disebabkan oleh kehilangan panas melalui dinding alat, gas buang, serta kondisi operasi yang belum optimal. Hasil PKL ini menunjukkan pentingnya pengendalian parameter operasi dan pemeliharaan peralatan untuk meningkatkan efisiensi proses, mengurangi konsumsi energi, serta mendukung kualitas produk bleaching earth yang dihasilkan.

This internship was conducted at PT Clariant Adsorbents Indonesia to study the bleaching earth production process, quality control system, and evaluate the performance of the Rotary Dryer (RD) as one of the primary drying units. Bleaching earth is an acid-activated bentonite-based adsorbent used to remove impurities, pigments, and coloring compounds from vegetable oils. The production process includes slurry preparation, sulfuric acid activation, filtration, washing, drying, grinding, and packaging, all of which are monitored through strict quality control testing to ensure product consistency. The Rotary Dryer performance evaluation was carried out by comparing the actual and theoretical efficiencies using mass and energy balance calculations. The evaluation results indicated that the actual dryer efficiency ranged from 56.40% to 60.25%, while the theoretical efficiency reached 92.84%. The efficiency gap was mainly attributed to heat losses through the dryer wall, exhaust gases, and non-ideal operating conditions. Overall, the internship demonstrated the importance of controlling operating parameters and maintaining equipment performance to improve process efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and ensure the production of high-quality bleaching earth products.
