Abstract

Exporting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Indonesia face challenges of low participation and market penetration in global trade compared to competitor countries in the Southeast Asian region. This condition renders the strengthening of internal operational efficiency and digital commercial agility crucial, particularly through the utilization of digital ecosystems and modern technology. This study aims to analyze the influence of Industrial Revolution 4.0 Technology Adoption (IR4.0TA) and Digital Trade Capability (DTC) on Export Performance (EP), as well as to examine the mediating role of Global Value Chain Upgrading (GVCU). This research focuses on exporting SMEs domiciled in Indonesia (dominated by the Java Island region) with a track record of active export activities. This study employs an exploratory quantitative method with a Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) approach using SmartPLS 4 software, surveying 158 valid respondents from the ranks of key decision makers (such as CEOs, directors, or export managers) who have passed the critical initial phase of exporting. The results confirm that Industrial Revolution 4.0 Technology Adoption (IR4.0TA) and Digital Trade Capability (DTC) have a direct, positive, and significant effect on Export Performance (EP) and trigger the advancement of Global Value Chain Upgrading (GVCU). Conversely, however, Global Value Chain Upgrading (GVCU) was found to have no significant effect on Export Performance (EP), thereby proving that GVCU fails to perform a mediating role in bridging the influence of either IR4.0TA or DTC on EP. This study complements the literature on the Resource-Based View (RBV) and Dynamic Capabilities Theory, and practically provides effective export marketing strategy recommendations for SMEs to focus on a direct-to-market approach through the optimization of cloud computing, integrated internet, and tactical digital transaction capabilities, while simultaneously evaluating global value chain investments to be purely and selectively allocated as mandatory regional compliance costs within intra-Asia for survival.
