Abstract

The nickel processing in Indonesia uses the Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) method. This process includes a sulfidation step used to produce nickel matte. The sulfidation process currently uses liquid sulfur, which has the potential to evaporate and produce SO₂ gas emissions. This study aims to analyze the effect of variations in sulfur gas flow rate on flow distribution, determine the optimal time to achieve reaction homogeneity in the calcine material, and evaluate the effectiveness of sulfur distribution across each domain of the calcine bed using a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach. Simulations were performed using COMSOL Multiphysics on a two-dimensional packed-bed reactor model with a porous medium representing the calcine material. The study included variables in sulfur gas flow velocity at 0.00254, 0.00508, and 0.00762 m/s and injection times of 5, 10, and 15 s. The observed parameters were sulfur concentration distribution, fluid flow patterns, and the homogeneity of sulfur distribution within the calcine bed. The simulation results show that flow velocity has a significant effect on the characteristics of sulfur distribution. A flow velocity that is too low causes sulfur to concentrate around the inlet area, while a flow velocity that is too high reduces the residence time, resulting in suboptimal contact between the sulfur and the material. A flow velocity of 0.00254 m/s produces a distribution.
