Abstract

The internship was conducted at PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk. Area Karaha, a geothermal power plant (GPP) that utilizes geothermal energy as a renewable energy source for electricity generation. The objective of the internship was to gain a comprehensive understanding of the geothermal power generation process, analyze the occupational safety system using the Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP) method, develop mass and energy balances for the main process units, and propose solutions to operational issues through troubleshooting activities. During the internship, direct observations were carried out on the entire electricity generation process, including geothermal fluid separation in the separator, steam purification in the scrubber, energy conversion in the turbine and generator, condensation, cooling, and fluid reinjection into the geothermal reservoir. The results indicated that the geothermal power plant had implemented effective process control and occupational health and safety management through the application of HSSE principles, permit-to-work systems, and hazard identification using the HAZOP method on major equipment. In addition, mass and energy balances were developed to evaluate process performance and material-energy conservation in each unit operation. The troubleshooting activity focused on the reactivation of the demineralization resin using HVAC condensate as the feed water source to improve cooling water quality. The evaluation demonstrated that the resin reactivation process successfully reduced the conductivity of demineralized water, thereby improving resin performance and supporting the reliability of the cooling system. Based on these findings, several recommendations were proposed, including optimization of the resin reactivation procedure, periodic monitoring of water quality, and improved control of operating parameters to enhance process efficiency, demineralization system reliability, and the long-term sustainability of geothermal power plant operations.
