Abstract

Buring in Malang, East Java, is a volcanic landform that was previously interpreted as a volcanic center or former crater based on its surface morphological characteristics. However, information regarding the subsurface structure of this area remains limited, so the mechanism of its formation has not yet been fully understood. This study aims to model the subsurface structure of Buring using gravity methods through 2.5D modeling and 3D inversion to evaluate the geological characteristics underlying this morphology. Gravity data were obtained from 100 measurement points consisting of two intersecting transects and several grid points. Data processing included gravity correction to obtain representative anomaly values, determination of reduced density using the Nettleton approach, calculation of the Complete Bouguer Anomaly (CBA), separation of regional and residual anomalies to identify local anomalies, as well as 2.5D and 3D modeling to interpret the geometry of the subsurface structure. The 2.5D and 3D models indicate the presence of a shallow intrusive body with a geometry resembling an inclined sill. Based on geometric characteristics, density distribution, and their relationship to surface morphology, the research results indicate that the Buring morphology is better interpreted as a dome formed by a shallow magma intrusion rather than as a volcanic body, as previously interpreted.
