Abstract

The Pacific leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) is the world's largest sea turtle species and is currently classified as endangered due to its significant population decline. The Jeen Womom Coastal Park in the Bird's Head Seascape, West Papua, is one of the most important nesting sites in the Western Pacific. Although various conservation initiatives have been implemented by the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) of the University of Papua through the *Science for Conservation* program, there is still a lack of educational media suitable for children aged 6–12 years. Existing conservation learning books are primarily designed for facilitators and employ a one-way learning approach, limiting children's active and independent participation in conservation education. Therefore, the collaboration between UNIPA and DKV ITS aims to develop an educational storybook on leatherback turtle conservation that meets the needs of children aged 6–12 years, reflects the local cultural context, and is easily accessible in the coastal areas of West Papua as a supporting medium for conservation activities. This research employs a qualitative approach using a visual communication design methodology. Data were collected through literature reviews, existing and comparative studies, observations, experimental stages, in-depth interviews, and evaluation of the design outcomes with the target audience. The resulting output consists of a three-book educational storybook series that presents the lives of leatherback turtles, dolphins, their habitats, threats, and conservation actions through narratives and illustrations tailored to the characteristics of the conservation area. This design is expected to serve as an effective supporting medium for conservation education among coastal children from an early age while strengthening the role of visual communication design in supporting the conservation of Pacific leatherback turtles in West Papua.
