Abstract

The Pacific leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) is one of the most endangered turtle species in the world. The Bird's Head Seascape Area, West Papua is the most important spawning habitat in the Western Pacific. Although various conservation efforts have been made, the challenge still lies in the low understanding and participation of coastal communities in the role of leatherback turtle habitat. This is influenced by geographical and economic conditions, limited access to information, and the strong influence of cultural values on local communities, so a more contextual and participatory communication approach needs to be taken. Based on this, this study aims to design a visual communication campaign strategy that is adaptive to local values in increasing the understanding and participation of the Bird's Head Seascape community to support the conservation of leatherback turtles. This research uses a qualitative approach through literature studies, existing and comparative studies from similar campaigns, field observations, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, expert interviews, sample interviews, and test of design results through user testing. The result of the design is a campaign strategy with the main media in the form of ambient media in public spaces that takes advantage of the captive audience conditions, especially on the Sabuk Nusantara 112 ferry, which is the main means of transportation for the people of the Bird's Head Seascape, West Papua. This media utilizes the condition of passengers who are on board for a long period of time, thereby increasing the intensity of message exposure. In addition, supporting media is also designed by taking into account local customs and culture. This design is expected to be able to build a deeper understanding, so that it can encourage active participation from the community in maintaining the sustainability of the Pacific leatherback turtle habitat in West Papua.
