Abstract

MRT stations in Indonesia function as transportation facilities as well as public spaces that must support social sustainability through the provision of access, safety, comfort, and inclusivity for users with diverse needs. This study aims to analyze the influence of community participation, connected construction, and project design on the social sustainability of MRT stations in Indonesia, as well as to test the role of project design as a mediating variable. Using a survey method with questionnaires, data were collected from 141 respondents consisting of 107 station users and 34 stakeholders of the Jakarta MRT project, then analyzed using the Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method. The results of the study show that community participation has a positive and significant effect on connected construction, project design, and social sustainability. Connected construction has a positive and significant effect on project design, but has no significant direct effect on social sustainability. Project design has a positive and significant effect on social sustainability and plays a role as a mediating variable in the relationship of community participation and connected construction to social sustainability. The largest direct effect is shown by the relationship between community participation variables and connected construction (path coefficient=0.617; T-statistic=11.184; p-value=0.000), while the largest indirect effect is proven through the connected construction path to social sustainability through project design mediation (path coefficient=0.152; T-statistic=2.589; p-value=0.010). The results of this study indicate that social sustainability at MRT stations in Indonesia can be increased through community involvement, application of connected construction, and station designs that are accessible, safe, comfortable, inclusive, and in accordance with user needs.
