Abstract

Universitas Papua (UNIPA) is a leading university in eastern Indonesia with a strong focus on environmental preservation and sustainable development. Through the Science for Conservation(S4C) program, UNIPA plays a strategic role in conserving the Pacific leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) at Jeen Womom Coastal Park. Since 2012, S4C has conducted nest monitoring, patrols, relocations, and community empowerment in Abun. Despite these efforts, populations continue to decline due to poaching, fisheries bycatch, habitat degradation, plastic pollution, and climate change, underscoring the need for adaptive conservation communication that engages youth as agents of change. In collaboration with Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), this study designed a participatory educational comic for adolescents aged 13-18 in the Bird's Head Seascape. Comics were choses for their ability to combine emotional narratives, scientific facts, and interactive elements, making conservation messages more accessible and culturally relevant. Using Kenneth Burke's Dramatism Pentad, the comic was structured to deliver coherent and persuasive messages. User testing revealed that the comic enhanced conservation knowledge and fostered motivation to act, while its integration of visuals and local language was well received. However, illustration clarity and color choices require refinement to better support narrative comprehension. Overall, Jejak Penyu Belimbing demonstrates strong potential as contextual and engaging conservation media for West Papuan youth.
