Abstract

The independent internship program at PT SUCOFINDO’s Surabaya Branch was conducted to apply knowledge of industrial chemical engineering technology in the testing, inspection, and certification sectors. Specific tasks during this internship focused on occupational safety and health (OSH) analysis through the assessment of operational risks at industrial facilities. Based on a weighted analysis of potential hazards, the Hot Annealing Pickling Line (HAPL) Department was identified as having the highest hazard contribution rate at 48.12%, which falls under Priority I (Very High). To mitigate these risks, a worst-case scenario simulation was conducted using ALOHA (Areal Locations of Hazardous Atmospheres) software to analyze the dispersion of the toxic gas hydrogen fluoride (HF). The ALOHA simulation results show that the fatal hazard zone (AEGL-3) extends to a radius of 1,026 yards (approximately 1 km) to the northeast, requiring strict evacuation procedures and early detection. In addition to the workplace environmental assessment, an engineering evaluation of the ferronickel production process was also conducted. This evaluation included the preparation of mass and energy balances for the Rotary Kiln unit, as well as the implementation of a Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP) for the Rotary Dryer unit. The HAZOP study identified several critical deviations related to temperature and flow rate, and formulated recommendations for improving control instruments to ensure operations remain within safe limits (ALARP). Through this internship, comprehensive recommendations were provided for updating the Major Hazard Control Document, optimizing safety systems, and enhancing medical preparedness to minimize the impact of workplace accidents.
