Abstract
Peningkatan kebutuhan energi nasional yang tidak sejalan dengan ketersediaan bahan bakar minyak mendorong pencarian sumber energi alternatif yang lebih berkelanjutan. Indonesia memiliki cadangan batubara peringkat rendah yang sangat melimpah, namun penggunaannya secara langsung pada mesin diesel kurang praktis. Salah satu cara pemanfaatannya adalah dengan membuat campuran antara batubara dan minyak, yang dikenal dengan Coal Oil Mixture (COM), sehingga memungkinkan aplikasi pada mesin diesel tanpa modifikasi besar. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi kinerja mesin dan emisi gas buang motor diesel berbahan bakar COM. Pengujian dilakukan secara eksperimental menggunakan motor diesel satu silinder dengan beberapa variasi campuran COM terhadap solar. Parameter kinerja yang diamati mencakup daya efektif, torsi, konsumsi bahan bakar spesifik (SFC), serta efisiensi termal, sedangkan emisi yang dianalisis meliputi CO, CO₂, HC, NOx, dan tingkat opasitas. Hasil pengujian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan COM memberikan pengaruh nyata terhadap unjuk kerja mesin. Pada rasio campuran tertentu, daya dan torsi relatif sebanding dengan solar murni, bahkan efisiensi termal dapat meningkat pada kondisi beban tertentu. Namun, SFC cenderung lebih tinggi dengan bertambahnya fraksi batubara. Dari sisi emisi, penggunaan COM menurunkan kadar CO dan HC, tetapi meningkatkan emisi partikulat dan NOx. Secara keseluruhan, Coal Oil Mixture (COM) berpotensi menjadi bahan bakar alternatif yang mendukung diversifikasi energi, meskipun diperlukan kajian lanjutan untuk mengendalikan emisi yang dihasilkan.

The rising national energy demand in contrast to the limited availability of petroleum fuels has prompted the search for alternative energy sources. Indonesia has abundant low-rank coal reserves, yet its direct use in diesel engines is less feasible. One promising approach is the development of Coal Oil Mixture (COM), a blend of coal and oil that can be applied to diesel engines without major modifications. This study experimentally investigates the performance and exhaust emissions of a single-cylinder diesel engine fueled with COM at various blending ratios with diesel fuel. The key performance parameters measured were brake power, torque, specific fuel consumption (SFC), and thermal efficiency, while the emission parameters included CO, CO₂, HC, NOx, and smoke opacity. The findings reveal that COM influences both engine performance and emissions. At certain blending ratios, brake power and torque were comparable to pure diesel, and thermal efficiency improved under specific loads. However, higher coal content led to increased SFC. From the emission perspective, COM reduced CO and HC levels but increased NOx and particulate emissions. In conclusion, Coal Oil Mixture (COM) presents potential as an alternative fuel to support energy diversification, though further research is required to optimize its emission characteristics.
