Abstract

Populasi penyu belimbing pasifik di kawasan Bentang Laut Kepala Burung, Papua Barat terus mengalami penurunan, sehingga dibutuhkan intervensi yang sistematis dan berkelanjutan berupa keterlibatan masyarakat secara aktif dalam program konservasi berbasis partisipatif. Universitas Papua (UNIPA) dan Science For Conversation (S4C) bekerja sama dengan Tim Peneliti ITS dalam perancangan media untuk community outreach masyarakat pesisir Papua Barat, salah satunya adalah media animasi untuk kelompok remaja. Berangkat dari masalah tersebut, dirancang animasi yang mengusung tema penyu belimbing pasifik dengan tujuan agar dapat memberi dorongan kepada remaja untuk menjaga kelestarian penyu belimbing pasifik di kawasan Bentang Laut Kepala Burung. Perancangan dilakukan menggunakan pendekatan mixed-methods melalui studi literatur, kuesioner, wawancara mendalam, dan studi eksperimental. Berdasarkan analisis terhadap kondisi riil masyarakat Bentang Laut Kepala Burung, proses perancangan difokuskan pada pengembangan narasi, desain karakter, storyboarding, serta produksi serial animasi berjudul "Aksi Kecil" yang diadaptasi dengan budaya lokal. Kelayakan luaran dievaluasi oleh S4C dan diuji cobakan kepada audiens melalui mekanisme pre-test dan post-test. Hasil evaluasi dari S4C menunjukkan bahwa animasi ini layak dan efektif digunakan sebagai media outreach konservasi. Sementara itu, hasil uji coba audiens mengindikasikan bahwa meskipun terdapat keterbatasan pada ukuran sampel dan homogenitas pengetahuan awal, animasi memiliki potensi efektivitas yang tinggi, khususnya dalam menyampaikan materi edukasi yang benar-benar baru bagi target audiens.

The population of Pacific leatherback turtles in the Bird’s Head Seascape, West Papua continues to decline, necessitating systematic and continuous intervention through active community involvement in participatory conservation programs. University of Papua (UNIPA) and Science for Conservation (S4C) collaborated with the ITS Research Team to design media for community outreach aimed at coastal communities in West Papua, one of which is an animation medium for adolescents. Addressing this issue, an animation themed around the Pacific leatherback turtle was designed with the objective of encouraging adolescents to preserve the Pacific leatherback turtle in the Bird’s head Seascape, West Papua. The design was conducted using a mixed-methods approach through literature studies, questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and an experimental study. Based on the analysis of the actual conditions of the Bird’s Head Seascape community, the design process focused on narrative development, character design, storyboarding, and the production of an animated series titled "Aksi Kecil" that was adapted to the local culture. The feasibility of the output was evaluated by experts from S4C and tested on the audience through pre-test and post-test mechanisms. The evaluation results from S4C showed that this animation is feasible and effective to be used as a conservation outreach medium. Meanwhile, the audience trial results indicated that despite limitations regarding the small sample size and the homogeneity of prior knowledge, the animation demonstrates high potential effectiveness, particularly in delivering entirely new educational materials to the target audience.
