Abstract

Drone technology, or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, is no longer exclusive to the public. With the openness of technological developments, drones that were initially used for military purposes can now be found in civilian sectors, such as for recreation and commercial purposes. However, with this accessibility comes challenges in the security of commercial drone systems. One popular commercial drone model is the DJI Tello. This drone can be flown using a smartphone application and uses Wi-Fi as the connection between devices. Attackers can exploit vulnerabilities in the drone, thereby disrupting its flight through operational manipulation and causing physical or material damage.
This study aims to conduct penetration testing on drone devices using spot jamming method with HackRF One Portapack to assess the security of drone systems. Forensic analysis is performed to evaluate the data captured during the attack process. The experiments utilized 12 different configurations, resulting in 12 screen recordings, 12 drone camera recordings, 12 packet capture files, and eight flight logs. Analysis of video evidences revealed that the video feed on the controller froze, and the drone camera recordings were fragmented with varying durations. Analysis of the .pcap files showed a high packet retransmission rate compared to the unattacked. Analysis of the logs indicated that the drone did not lose connection with the controller and exhibited no movement that indicates the drone loses control or fell.
