Abstract

Biofouling is the phenomenon of unwanted organisms attaching themselves and accumulating on a submerged substrate. Biofouling organisms that attach themselves to submerged substrates such as ship hulls can potentially reduce cruising speed, increase fuel consumption, increase greenhouse gas emissions, and increase the frequency of docking, which leads to a surge in ship maintenance costs. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Self-Polishing Copolymer (SPC) antifouling paint using DCOIT (4,5-Dichloro-2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one) as a booster biocide in controlling the growth of these organisms. DCOIT was chosen because it degrades rapidly in the marine environment, thereby reducing its long-term environmental persistence. The main focus of this study is to analyze the significance of the influence of DCOIT, immersion period, and immersion location on the percentage of coverage and fouling rating on the test panel. In addition, this study also tested the correlation between seawater quality parameters in the form of chlorine, ammonium, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity to each type of biofouling. These findings are expected to serve as an important reference for the maritime industry regarding the consideration of using DCOIT as a booster biocide and guidance in selecting the optimal berthing location to minimize the accumulation of biofouling.
