Abstract

This study explores the implementation of sustainable sourcing practices within the Indonesian wood furniture industry and evaluates its impact on long-term business sustainability, focusing specifically on the case of UD. CFU, a medium-scale export-oriented manufacturer. As global demand for ethically and legally produced wood grows, particularly in European markets, compliance with sustainability standards has become a prerequisite for international market entry. Using a qualitative case study approach, the research involved semi-structured interviews with a business practitioner and a forestry government official, alongside a literature review and an analysis using the Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) framework. The study identifies the roles and differences between major certification systems, such as the mandatory national Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu (SVLK) and the voluntary international Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Findings reveal that while these certifications significantly improve internal operational management, enhance supply chain transparency, and reduce material waste, they impose substantial financial and administrative burdens on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). High certification costs (approximately Rp 130,000,000 for SVLK and Rp 65,000,000 for FSC) coupled with minimal market price premiums (averaging only USD $3 per product), create a gap between theoretical sustainability benefits and operational realities. The research concludes that for sustainable sourcing to effectively drive business resilience, stakeholders must address challenges such as inconsistent government support and bureaucratic constraints. Strategic recommendations include the reactivation of group certification schemes, the adoption of digital traceability systems, and the implementation of circular economy practices to enhance competitiveness and environmental outcomes.
