Abstract
Kegiatan magang dilaksanakan di PT Arwana Citramulia Tbk Plant 3 Gresik pada bagian Quality Assurance, Quality Control, dan Research and Development dengan tujuan mempelajari penerapan pengendalian mutu pada industri keramik serta menganalisis pengaruh komposisi body terhadap terjadinya defect selama pembakaran. Kegiatan meliputi pengamatan proses produksi mulai dari persiapan bahan baku, pembentukan slip, spray drying, pressing, pengeringan, pelapisan, pembakaran, hingga pemeriksaan kualitas produk. Studi khusus dilakukan terhadap defect retak pre-heating, retak tengah, dan spot hole melalui observasi lapangan, studi literatur, pembuatan lima variasi formulasi body keramik (F1–F5), serta pengujian linear weight, viskositas, residu, firing shrinkage, loss on ignition (LOI), bending strength, dan water absorption. Hasil pengujian menunjukkan bahwa formulasi F2 memberikan karakteristik paling seimbang dengan nilai firing shrinkage 2,85%, LOI 3,10%, bending strength 230 kg/cm², water absorption 9,94%, linear weight 1.688 g/L, viskositas 35 detik, dan residu 5,41%. Penambahan 7% pyrophyllite pada formulasi tersebut membantu menjaga kestabilan termal dan mengendalikan penyusutan awal, sedangkan penggunaan 8% feldspar FGB sebagai flux mendukung pembentukan fase cair secara bertahap sehingga proses sintering berlangsung lebih terkendali. Keseimbangan antara penyusutan, kekuatan mekanik, pelepasan volatil, dan porositas pada formulasi F2 menunjukkan potensi paling baik dalam mengurangi risiko retak pre-heating, retak tengah, dan spot hole. Dengan demikian, pengendalian komposisi pyrophyllite dan feldspar FGB merupakan salah satu upaya yang dapat diterapkan untuk meningkatkan kestabilan proses pembakaran dan konsistensi mutu produk keramik.

The internship was conducted at PT Arwana Citramulia Tbk Plant 3 Gresik in the Quality Assurance, Quality Control, and Research and Development departments. The internship aimed to study the implementation of quality control in the ceramic industry and to analyze the effect of ceramic body composition on defect formation during the firing process. The activities included observing the production process, starting from raw material preparation, slip preparation, spray drying, pressing, drying, coating, and firing, to final product quality inspection. A specific study was conducted on pre-heating cracks, center cracks, and spot-hole defects through field observations, literature reviews, the preparation of five ceramic body formulations (F1–F5), and several tests, including linear weight, viscosity, residue, firing shrinkage, loss on ignition (LOI), bending strength, and water absorption. The test results showed that formulation F2 provided the most balanced characteristics, with a firing shrinkage of 2.85%, LOI of 3.10%, bending strength of 230 kg/cm², water absorption of 9.94%, linear weight of 1,688 g/L, viscosity of 35 seconds, and residue content of 5.41%. The addition of 7% pyrophyllite in this formulation helped maintain thermal stability and control the initial shrinkage, while the use of 8% FGB feldspar as a flux promoted the gradual formation of a liquid phase, allowing the sintering process to proceed in a more controlled manner. The balance among shrinkage, mechanical strength, volatile release, and porosity in formulation F2 demonstrated the greatest potential for reducing the risk of pre-heating cracks, center cracks, and spot-hole defects. Therefore, controlling the proportions of pyrophyllite and FGB feldspar can be applied as an approach to improve firing-process stability and maintain consistent ceramic product quality.
