Abstract

Pollution from textile wastewater containing persistent azo dyes such as Congo Red remains a serious environmental problem due to their stability, toxicity, and resistance to natural degradation, posing a serious threat to ecosystems. Semiconductor-based heterogeneous photocatalysis has been widely developed as a solution; however, single materials such as TiO2 and g-C3N4 still have limitations in the form of rapid charge recombination. To overcome these limitations, a g-C3N4 /TiO2 heterojunction system with the addition of palladium (Pd) as an electron trap is needed to suppress charge recombination and enhance dye degradation efficiency. Therefore, in this study, the sol-gel method combined with variations in ultrasonication time was chosen to ensure uniform dispersion of Pd and strong interphase interactions. Ultrasonication times examined in this study were 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 minutes. Characterization was performed using FTIR, XRD, SEM-EDS, BET, and PL to analyze the crystal structure, functional groups, morphology, and surface area of the material. Following characterization, photocatalytic activity and reusability were evaluated using UV-Vis analysis and a scavenger test. The results showed that an ultrasonication time of 20 minutes was the optimal condition, yielding a degradation efficiency of 89.78% and a reaction rate constant of 0.0176 min-1. Increasing the ultrasonication time beyond the optimal condition reduced photocatalytic performance, which is believed to be caused by the re-agglomeration of nanoparticles due to the dominance of van der Waals forces, thereby reducing the active surface area and inhibiting charge transfer.
