Abstract

Distillery Spent Wash (DSW) is the primary wastewater generated by the bioethanol industry, characterized by a very high organic content as indicated by its elevated Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), which poses a significant environmental risk if discharged without proper treatment. On the other hand, these characteristics make DSW a promising substrate for renewable energy production in the form of biogas through Anaerobic Digestion (AD). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of feed concentration on biogas production, methane production, and COD removal efficiency during the anaerobic treatment of DSW using a Plug-Flow Anaerobic Digester (PFAD). The experiment was conducted using a laboratory-scale PFAD with a working volume of 60 L, operated continuously under natural mesophilic conditions (30–45 °C). The evaluated parameters included influent and effluent COD, pH, methane production, Specific Methane Yield (SMY), and COD removal efficiency. At a feed concentration of 11,211.58 mg/L, the system produced a cumulative biogas volume of 111.181 L, a total methane production of 69.890 L, a Specific Methane Yield of 0.141 L CH₄/g COD removed (STP), and a COD removal efficiency of 73.45%. Meanwhile, at a feed concentration of 20,996.71 mg/L, the cumulative biogas production reached 62.130 L, with a total methane production of 42.313 L, a Specific Methane Yield of 0.042 L CH₄/g COD removed (STP), and a higher COD removal efficiency of 79.56%.
