Abstract

======
Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a promising material for application as a photoactive layer in photodiode or photodetector devices; however, its optical and mechanical performance remains limited. Therefore, this study was directed toward improving its performance by incorporating polymorphic silica particles (xerogel, amorphous, and crystalline) or activated carbon (C) derived from rice husk. PVA/silica composites were synthesized using a casting method with a PVA-to-silica particle mass ratio of 9:1. Using the same method, PVA/C composites were prepared with filler mass fractions ranging from 0.5% to 5%. This study aims to investigate the structural characteristics and optical properties of silica polymorph particles, and to analyze the influence of silica polymorph type and activated carbon mass fraction on the mechanical and optical properties of both composite types, with particular emphasis on their structural aspects. Xerogel silica and amorphous silica possess amorphous phases, silanol groups, irregular morphologies, high specific surface areas, and are rich in structural defects. In contrast, crystalline silica is dominated by the cristobalite phase with a minor tridymite phase, and exhibits a denser structure with minimal structural defects. These structural defects act as centers for exciton formation. Accordingly, xerogel silica exhibits the strongest emission because it contains the highest density of structural defects, followed by amorphous silica and crystalline silica. Xerogel silica exhibits the highest emission intensity, with a blue emission peak and an average lifetime of 392.37 ns. Amorphous silica has an emission center in the same region as xerogel silica, but with a shorter average lifetime of 4.08 ns. Meanwhile, crystalline silica shows an emission center in the green region with the shortest average lifetime, 1.24 ns. The incorporation of polymorphic silica particles into PVA results in physical interactions that increase the matrix's stiffness. Changes in matrix stiffness and the availability of structural defects in the silica polymorphs constructively enhance the excitation of the PVA/silica composites. PVA composite filled with xerogel silica particles exhibits the highest excitation peak for this type of π→π^*transition, reaching 7.86 times that of unfilled PVA, whereas PVA composites filled with amorphous and crystalline silica show increases of only 1.72 and 1.01 times, respectively. This enhancement is positively correlated with the increase in the emission spectrum, although the average emission lifetime becomes shorter than that of unfilled PVA. These characteristics indicate that PVA filled with xerogel silica particles has greater potential for photoactive applications, even though its mechanical reinforcement (storage modulus) is lower than that of the other composites. The dispersion of activated carbon particles into PVA also increases the matrix stiffness and the storage modulus of PVA/C composites, particularly in the glass transition region. The increased matrix stiffness, together with the presence of exciton-forming centers in the form of C=O groups on activated carbon, enhances the excitation of this type of n→π^* transition in direct proportion to the activated carbon mass fraction. The optimum reinforcement was observed for the PVA composite containing 5% activated carbon particles, which reached 35.15 times that of the unfilled PVA. This increase in excitation is accompanied by higher emission intensity, but a shorter average emission lifetime. Thus, the PVA composite containing 5% activated carbon particles shows greater potential as a photoactive layer than composites with other compositions, as it exhibits the greatest enhancement in both electronic transitions and mechanical properties.
