Abstract

The construction of the Gempol–Pasuruan Toll Road at STA 28+000 to STA 33+852 is located on a soft soil layer with a depth of approximately 16 meters, which has the potential to cause significant settlement and reduce embankment stability. Borelog results at several points indicate that the subsoil is predominantly clayey silt with low bearing capacity, resulting in risks of excessive settlement, and potential embankment slope failure due to embankment heights reaching 9.2 meters. The initial condition showed a slope safety factor of 0.52, which is lower than the minimum requirement of 1.5; therefore, adequate soil improvement and embankment reinforcement design are required. This study began by analyzing consolidation settlement, secondary settlement, rate of settlement, and slope stability. If the evaluation results indicated significant settlement and an embankment stability value lower than 1.5, soil improvement and reinforcement were designed according to the required conditions. In addition, an alternative design was proposed using the preloading method combined with the installation of Prefabricated Vertical Drains (PVD) to accelerate soil consolidation. Meanwhile, geotextile and micropile reinforcements were used to improve embankment stability. The analysis of the existing embankment with a height of 9.2 m indicated that the rate of settlement in the 10th year was 53.4 cm/year. Based on these results, a 12 cm asphalt overlay is required and is planned to be applied in the 10th year after the road commenced operation in 2017. In addition, seven 60 cm diameter micropiles installed on one side are required to satisfy the slope stability requirements. The evaluation of the box culvert revealed that the structure already meets the minimum safety factor requirement; therefore, no additional reinforcement is necessary. For the proposed improvement, a combination of preloading and Prefabricated Vertical Drains (PVDs) with a spacing of 0.7 m was applied, accelerating the soil consolidation process and achieving the target degree of consolidation within 21 weeks. As the basal reinforcement, 49 layers of one-sided Polypropylene Woven Geotextile UW-20 with a design tensile strength of 100 kN/m were adopted. As an alternative reinforcement method, five 60 cm diameter micropiles installed on one side were also found to provide embankment stability that satisfies the required safety criteria.
