Abstract
Indonesia merupakan salah satu dari 13 negara yang memiliki wilayah habitat harimau yang menampung sub-spesies harimau (Panthera tigris) terkecil, harimau Sumatera (Panthera tigris ssp. sumatrae). Berdasarkan laporan SSC Cat Specialist Group, populasi harimau hanya sekitar 393 ekor tersisa dan tren menurun. Faktor yang menyebabkan turunnya populasi menurun berupa degradasi ekosistem, perburuan liar, dan konflik antar manusia dan harimau. Kerusakan habitat harimau dan kepunahan harimau akan mengakibatkan degradasi ekosistem, berkurangnya keanekaragaman hayati, penyebaran wabah penyakit, regresi ekonomi negara, dan yang akan paling merasakan dampaknya adalah generasi muda. Apabila dilihat dari Kurikulum Merdeka, terdapat mata pelajaran Ekologi dan Keanekaragaman Hayati Indonesia yang bertujuan untuk mengedukasi siswa terhadap pengaruh manusia terhadap lingkungan dan pentingnya konservasi keanekaragaman hayati.
Hal ini membuka oportunitas untuk membangun simpati siswa SMP terhadap upaya konservasi harimau Sumatera menggunakan multimedia pembelajaran interaktif yang dapat menangkap perhatian dan melibatkan penonton dalam isu konservasi harimau. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, perancangan animasi film pendek perihal konservasi harimau Sumatera dapat membangun simpati siswa SMP terhadap upaya konservasi dan meningkatkan kesadaran siswa terkait ancaman yang dihadapi harimau Sumatera dan bentuk upaya konservasi harimau Sumatera.

Indonesia is one of the remaining 13 countries that has tigers’ natural habitat and is home to the smallest tiger subspecies, the Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris ssp. sumatrae). According to the SSC Cat Specialist Group, only approximately 393 individuals run in the wild, and the population continues to decline. The primary factors contributing to this decline includes habitat degradation, poaching, and human–tiger conflict. The destruction of tiger habitats and the potential extinction of the Sumatran tiger could lead to reduced biodiversity, which increases the risk of disease outbreaks, ecosystem degradation and economic setbacks. The younger generation is expected to bear the greatest consequences of these environmental impacts. Moreover, the younger generation, particularly junior high students around the age of 12-15, is currently studying Ecology and Indonesian Biodiversity in their curriculum, which are designed to educate students about the effects of human activities on the environment and the importance of biodiversity conservation. This presents an opportunity to foster empathy among junior high school students toward Sumatran tiger conservation through interactive multimedia education that captures their attention and actively engages them regarding conservation issues. Based on the findings of this study, the development of an animated short film about Sumatran tiger conservation has the potential to cultivate empathy among junior high school students and even educate them on the threats towards the Sumatran tigers and the conservation efforts implemented.
