Abstract

The crystallization process of aluminum fluoride trihydrate (AlF₃·3H₂O) at PT Petrokimia Gresik plays a crucial role in determining product yield and energy efficiency; however, the existing operating temperature of 90–95°C results in suboptimal crystal formation and high steam consumption. Therefore, a troubleshooting study was conducted to evaluate the effects of crystallizer temperature and seed ratio on crystal formation using theoretical approaches based on mass and energy balances, literature, and patent references. The analysis indicated that the optimum operating condition was achieved at 75°C with a seed ratio of 1.5 times the AlF₃ feed and a residence time of 4 hours, resulting in an approximately 3% increase in yield, a 56.38% reduction in steam consumption, and an annual utility cost reduction of approximately 65.04% compared with the current plant operation. These findings suggest that the proposed operating conditions can improve crystallization efficiency while reducing the operating cost of aluminum fluoride production.
