Abstract

The use of reinforcing steel in reinforced concrete construction has the potential to generate material waste due to the mismatch between the standard bar length of 12 m and the varying cutting lengths required by the structural design. This problem is modeled as a One-Dimensional Cutting Stock Problem (1D-CSP). This study aims to analyze and compare the optimization of reinforcing steel utilization and material waste using the Linear Programming (LP) and Best Fit Decreasing (BFD) methods based on the number of bars, waste percentage, and utilization rate. The case study was conducted at the Ditreskrimsus Building of East Java Regional Police, focusing on beams, columns, and slabs. The data were obtained through Building Information Modeling (BIM) using Cubicost TAS and Cubicost TRB and subsequently processed into a Bar Bending Schedule (BBS) as the optimization input. The LP method was formulated as an Integer Linear Programming model and solved using the intlinprog solver in MATLAB, while the BFD method was implemented as a heuristic algorithm based on descending cutting lengths. The results show that the LP method requires 19,839 reinforcing bars, with a total material waste of 9,000,791 mm, a waste percentage ranging from 0.43% to 20.78%, and a utilization rate ranging from 79.21% to 99.56%. Meanwhile, the BFD method requires 20,283 reinforcing bars, with a total material waste of 14,328,791 mm, a waste percentage ranging from 1.74% to 22.29%, and a utilization rate ranging from 77.70% to 98.25%. Based on the comparative results, the LP method demonstrated better performance than the BFD method, achieving 1.33%–1.95% higher efficiency in the number of bars, 1.31%–1.51% lower waste percentage, and 1.31%–1.51% higher utilization rate.
