Abstract

The 2017 Indonesian Seismic Hazard Map, adopted in SNI 1726:2019, has increased the seismic design demand for existing buildings in various regions, including Malang City. Consequently, buildings designed based on SNI 1726:2012 need to be evaluated to ensure that their seismic performance still satisfies the current requirements. Considering that university buildings are public facilities with high occupancy levels and intensive daily utilization, as well as the potential for changes in space utilization and increased operational activities throughout their service life, evaluating and improving their seismic performance is essential to ensure occupant safety. This study evaluates and rehabilitates a 10-story university building using a Friction Pendulum System (FPS) base isolation system. The structural evaluation was conducted in accordance with SNI 9273:2025 through Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 procedures, while the structural response was analyzed using Nonlinear Time History Analysis (NLTHA) with 11 spectrally matched ground motion records. The evaluation results indicate that several beams, columns, and beam-column joints exhibit structural deficiencies requiring seismic rehabilitation. The implementation of the FPS increased the fundamental period from 1.85 s to 3.217 s and reduced the average maximum base shear by 46.82% and 50,13% in the X and Y directions, respectively. In addition, the average maximum interstory drift decreased by 44.31% in the X direction and 47.82% in the Y direction compared to the fixed-base condition. The average maximum roof acceleration was also reduced by 36.84% and 35.73% in the X and Y directions, respectively. Furthermore, the structural performance level improved from Collapse Prevention (CP) in the existing structure to Operational (O) after rehabilitation. Therefore, the application of the FPS base isolation system is proven to effectively enhance the seismic performance of the existing building, enabling it to satisfy the evaluation and rehabilitation requirements specified in SNI 9273:2025.
