Abstract

The construction of the Kayu Agung–Palembang–Betung (KAPB) section of the Trans-Sumatra Toll Road faces geotechnical challenges due to the presence of thick soft soil at STA 52+200–52+300 and shallow soft soil at STA 67+400–67+500. These conditions may result in excessive settlement, prolonged consolidation time, and a Rate of Settlement (ROS) that does not satisfy the design criteria, requiring appropriate ground improvement methods. This study evaluates the necessity of the replacement method for shallow soft soil and compares the effectiveness of the preloading method combined with Prefabricated Vertical Drains (PVD) and lightweight embankments using foam mortar for thick soft soil. The analysis was conducted using secondary data by evaluating settlement, consolidation time, ROS, embankment stability, geotextile reinforcement requirements, and material costs. The results show that the planned embankment on shallow soft soil produced settlements of 0.1072–0.1256 m, with ROS values exceeding the allowable limit, indicating the need for the replacement method. For thick soft soil, both the preloading–PVD method and lightweight foam mortar embankments satisfied the settlement criteria. Higher foam mortar percentages reduced settlement, ROS, and the required replacement thickness. In addition, the 60% foam mortar alternative satisfied the design requirements without replacement, whereas the 20% and 40% alternatives still required replacement at specific locations. Stability analysis showed that the required geotextile reinforcement ranged from 55.60 to 261.60 m, whereas some alternatives required no reinforcement. From the material cost perspective, the preloading–PVD method was the most economical alternative at STA 52+200 and STA 52+250, with material costs of IDR 3,938,984,200.00 and IDR 3,774,391,400.00, respectively, while the 20% foam mortar alternative was the most economical at STA 52+300, with a material cost of IDR 2,438,103,200.00. Therefore, the selection of the appropriate ground improvement method should be based on site-specific soil conditions while considering both technical performance and material costs.
