Abstract

The Krian–Legundi–Bunder–Manyar (KLBM) Toll Road features a 447-meter bridge segment (STA 10+188–STA 10+635) with an existing bridge approach that utilizes a pile slab system. This approach structure is constructed over a soft-to-medium clay layer extending to a depth of 8 meters, posing risks of significant consolidation settlement and slope instability. This Final Project aims to evaluate the volume and cost of the existing pile slab structure and to design alternative approach configurations using combined soil and lightweight foam mortar embankments (with foam mortar variations of 0%, 20%, 40%, and 60%) for both the south (STA 9+775–STA 10+188) and north (STA 10+635–STA 10+829) approaches. The alternative designs incorporate ground improvement using Prefabricated Vertical Drains (PVD) combined with either micropile or geotextile reinforcement. The analysis indicates that the existing pile slab structure requires a total cost of IDR 51,683,640,504.57, comprising IDR 36,019,092,038.85 for the south approach and IDR 15,664,548,465.72 for the north approach. For the alternative design, the selected PVD configuration is a square pattern with a spacing of 1.0 m for the south approach and 1.5 m for the north approach, which accelerates consolidation to achieve a 90% degree of consolidation by the 22nd and 16th weeks, respectively. Increasing the percentage of foam mortar is proven effective in reducing the required embankment height, minimizing settlement magnitude, and significantly decreasing the need for reinforcement materials. Based on the cost analysis, the embankment design reinforced with geotextiles at a 0% foam mortar variation (100% soil) is concluded to be the most cost-effective alternative. This option requires a total cost of IDR 22,977,796,759.28 for the south approach and IDR 22,355,864,974.69 for the north approach. In terms of cumulative project cost, the alternative embankment design requires a total of IDR 45,333,661,733.97, proving to be more economical by saving IDR 6,349,978,770.60 compared to the existing pile slab structure.
