Abstract

Indonesia's high seismic activity necessitates structural systems capable of providing reliable seismic performance. Steel Plate Shear Wall (SPSW) is an effective lateral force-resisting system that enhances structural performance under earthquake loading. This study aims to design the steel structure of the Patra Hotel Surabaya and compare the seismic performance of Unstiffened SPSW and Composite SPSW systems. The study was conducted through the design of primary and secondary structural members, load analysis, three-dimensional structural modeling, SPSW design, connection design, and structural performance evaluation based on the Performance-Based Seismic Design (PBSD) concept. Model 1 employs Unstiffened SPSW, whereas Model 2 employs Composite SPSW. Structural performance was evaluated using pushover analysis by assessing energy dissipation capacity, base shear, inter-story drift, roof displacement, and structural performance level. The expansion joint analysis indicates that both models require an expansion joint width of 450 mm. Compared with Model 1, Model 2 demonstrates higher energy dissipation capacity by 5,21% in the X-direction and 12,33% in the Y-direction for Tower 1, and by 33,54% and 7.9%, respectively, for Tower 2. Base shear also increases by 22,05% and 19,16% for Tower 1, and by 21,06% and 19,38% for Tower 2 in the X- and Y-directions, respectively. Furthermore, Model 2 reduces the maximum inter-story drift by 0,64% and 7,98% for Tower 1, and by 6,17% and 3,14% for Tower 2 in the X- and Y-directions, respectively. Roof displacement is also reduced by 6,07% and 1,37% for Tower 1, and by 0,36% and 4,25% for Tower 2. According to ASCE 41-13, both models satisfy the required seismic performance objective, achieving performance levels ranging from Immediate Occupancy (IO) to Life Safety (LS).
