Abstract

Non-surgical management of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) relies heavily on orthoses (braces) to maintain spinal stability. The main limitation of conventional orthoses is their static design, which fails to accommodate changes in body dimensions due to growth spurts, leading to cost inefficiency and low patient compliance. In this study, we developed a Thoracolumbosacral Orthosis (TLSO) design featuring a mechanical system capable of adapting to changes in height and body circumference. The Design Thinking approach was used as the primary framework for modeling solutions to the problem. Design dimension parameters were analyzed based on anthropometric data from Indonesian adolescents and the biomechanical principle of three-point pressure. A visual model was developed using CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software to customize components. The design results show that integrating an adjustable system into the brace structure extends the product’s lifespan and enhances physical comfort through the use of breathable materials and a more ergonomic profile.
