Abstract

The construction of a workshop at KM 13 of the Balikpapan–Samarinda Highway plays a vital role as a construction material storage hub to support various strategic projects in East Kalimantan. However, the stability of this infrastructure is threatened by recurring landslides in the area. Consequently, further investigations were conducted to determine the root cause of these slope failures. Based on Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) scan results, a subsurface zone with low resistivity values was detected. This data is interpreted as an indication of high groundwater accumulation, which is highly suspected to be the primary trigger for the continuous landslides. This study aims to identify the main causes of slope failure by interpreting the GPR scanning data and to design a groundwater control system through the application of a subdrain to reduce excess subsurface pore water pressure. This drainage control is implemented prior to designing alternative physical slope reinforcements using sheet piles and bored piles. The selection of these reinforcement alternatives is based on effectiveness and efficiency criteria.
