Abstract

The decline in natural pollination efficiency in oil palm plantations due to the decreasing population of Elaeidobius kamerunicus has directly contributed to reduced fresh fruit bunch productivity. Manual pollination practices currently employed face limitations in consistency, labor efficiency, and precision of pollen application. This research developed a drone-mounted automatic pollination module capable of performing oil palm pollination autonomously. The module comprises a pollen reservoir tube, a servo motor-actuated valve that controls pollen release, and a DC blower motor that disperses pollen toward the target flower. A digital camera continuously captures flower imagery for real-time analysis by a deep learning model, when a receptive female flower is detected and sufficient pollen volume is confirmed, the system automatically opens the valve and activates the blower to spray pollen. A VL53L0X Time-of-Flight sensor mounted above the reservoir monitors pollen surface height non-contactly as a pre-activation availability check for each spray cycle. A Raspberry Pi 5 serves as the sole computing unit, running the full inference pipeline, sensor readings, and actuator control in an integrated manner. YOLOv11 was selected after benchmarking six YOLO architecture variants (YOLOv8, YOLOv9, YOLOv10, YOLOv11, YOLOv12, and YOLO26) against accuracy and inference speed on the Raspberry Pi 5. The detection model was trained on a dataset of 402 annotated oil palm flower images in two classes (receptive and non-receptive), expanded through augmentation to 726 images, and supplemented with 300 internet-sourced images, reaching a total of 1,026 images. Experimental results demonstrated that YOLOv11 in NCNN format achieved the best overall performance, recording a mAP@0.5 of 0.9400 in the cloud environment and 0.9023 on the Raspberry Pi 5, with an inference speed of 30.85 FPS and a latency of 32.42 ms. The VL53L0X sensor successfully measured pollen volume with an accuracy of ±1 mm after applying a moving average filter. Integrated system testing across 16 trials yielded a 70% pollination success rate (11 out of 16 trials), with the effective pollination range established at 10–41 cm, an ideal operational distance of 35 cm, and the sensor correctly blocking activation in all cases where pollen volume fell below the threshold. Integration of the system onto a DJI Avata 2 drone was successfully achieved with a total system payload of 370 grams, and flight testing at 3 meters altitude demonstrated stable hover without interference to the onboard electronics.
