Abstract

Corrosion of SS400 steel is one of the main problems that can reduce the service life of the material and increase maintenance costs. One effort to increase the corrosion resistance of SS400 steel is through the use of epoxy-based coatings modified with nanocellulose. This study aims to optimize the parameters of nanocellulose/epoxy coatings on the corrosion resistance of SS400 steel using the Taguchi method. Factors used in the optimization include nanocellulose mass (1,5; 3; 4,5% (w/w)), immersion time (1, 3; and 5 minutes), and corrosion media (HCl 1 M, H₂SO₄ 0,5 M, and NaCl 3,5% (w/v)) with an L9 orthogonal array experimental design. The results showed that variations in coating parameters affected the corrosion current density (Icorr). The S/N ratio analysis with smaller the better showed that the corrosion medium was the most dominant factor affecting corrosion resistance with a delta value of 42,54, followed by immersion time of 4,23 and nanocellulose mass of 1,75. The ANOVA results showed that the corrosion medium had a significant effect on the response with a p value of 0,01 and an F value of 75,41. The regression model obtained had a determination coefficient (R²) value of 94,82%, indicating a very good level of model suitability. The optimum coating condition was obtained at a combination of 4,5% (w/w) nanocellulose mass, 5 minutes immersion time, and 3,5% (w/v) NaCl corrosion medium, with a predicted S/N ratio value of 133,55 dB. The confirmation test results produced an average S/N ratio of 146,82 dB within the 95% confidence interval, with an error percentage of 4,44–11,45%. Under these optimum conditions, an average Icorr value of 5,43 x 10⁻⁸ A/cm² and an average inhibition efficiency (%EI) of 99,96% were obtained. Characterization using a digital microscope showed that the nanocellulose/epoxy coating produced a smoother surface without any indication of crevice corrosion. Based on these results, the Taguchi method successfully determined the optimum parameter combination of nanocellulose/epoxy coating that was effective in increasing the corrosion resistance of SS400 steel.
