Abstract

The sports footwear industry is currently experiencing a paradigm shift towards a natural movement approach through the adoption of barefoot shoes. Biomechanically, this approach has been proven to restore anatomical function and strengthen the Intrinsic Foot Muscles (IFM). However, the minimalist footwear design principle, which highly prioritizes flexibility, results in a lack of lateral stability support. On the other hand, the sport of padel demands highly dynamic movement characteristics, dominated by extreme lateral motions, rapid changes of direction, and sudden decelerations that concentrate mechanical loads on the lower extremity joints. While conventional padel shoes provide maximum stability, their rigid structures restrict foot freedom and inhibit the conditioning function of the intrinsic muscles. Based on this market gap, this project aims to design a barefoot shoe concept equipped with lateral stability features as a means of strengthening the intrinsic foot muscles for padel players. The design methodology includes literature studies on biomechanics, user preference studies, biomechanical activity analysis, structural experimentation, and prototyping. The result of this design is a padel-specific barefoot footwear concept that maintains the fundamental elements of a flat sole (zero-drop) and toe freedom (wide toe box) but is integrated with lateral stability protection features. This innovation is expected to support natural foot muscle conditioning functions while providing safety from injury risks caused by explosive maneuvers on the padel court.
