Abstract

Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) is a widely used additive in various industries, including plastics, rubber, paints and coatings, adhesives, and pharmaceuticals. This study investigates the design of a PCC production plant based on the utilization of steel industry waste, namely steel slag as a calcium source and Blast Furnace Gas (BFG) as a CO₂ source, both sourced from PT Krakatau Posco with an availability of 350,000 tons/year and 2,000 Nm³/hour, respectively. Process technology selection was carried out by evaluating four methods, namely Carbonation, Lime Soda, Solvay, and SkyCycle, using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) framework. The evaluation results indicate that the SkyCycle method is the most optimal technology, as it maintains product quality while fulfilling environmental and sustainability aspects. The production process is divided into four main units, comprising a pre-treatment unit (size reduction, alkaline fusion, water leaching, filtration, and acid leaching), a precipitation unit (carbonation and precipitation), a post-treatment unit (centrifuge, filtration, drying, and size reduction), and a recycle unit (evaporation, crystallization, centrifuge, calcination, slaking, and scrubber). The plant is planned to commence operations in 2030 at the Krakatau Industrial Estate, Cilegon, Banten, with a production capacity of 10,000 tons/year, yielding PCC at 1,262.6 kg/hour with a purity of 96.6% and moisture content of 1.0%. Economic feasibility analysis demonstrates promising results, with an NPV of IDR 384,412,806,961.87, IRR of 17.30%, payback period of 5.54 years, and BEP achieved at 63.97% capacity. This design is expected to serve as an alternative development pathway for a PCC industry that is resourceefficient and environmentally sound, grounded in the green industry concept in Indonesia.
