Abstract

Samarinda Sarong is one of Indonesia’s traditional woven textiles with significant historical and aesthetic value. However, its application in contemporary women’s bag design remains limited, while the placement of its motifs in existing products has not fully optimized the visual identity of the textile. This study aims to explore strategies for motif cutting and placement, as well as the adaptation of furoshiki folding and knotting techniques in women’s bag design without compromising structural stability. The resulting designs are then evaluated based on capacity, comfort, security, strength, and users’ aesthetic perceptions. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with an exploratory approach, including literature review, observation, interviews, questionnaires, material and technique exploration, design development, prototype production, and user evaluation. The results of this study are presented in the form of a series of women’s bags that preserve the visual readability of Samarinda Sarong motifs through the adaptation of furoshiki techniques while offering an alternative approach to contemporary fashion product design.
