Abstract

Children in war-affected environments are often excluded from public life, confined to segregated shelters that prioritize safety but neglect their need for play, agency, and learning. This lack of inclusion influences children’s emotional well-being, social growth, and connection to their surroundings. According to Colin Ward in The Child in the City (1978), children are active citizens who inevitably claim their environments and should live in the same world as adults, not in isolated or artificial zones. He argues that residual spaces such as streets, vacant lots, and informal gaps play an important role for children’s exploration, learning, and integration. The challenge, then, is how to reintroduce these qualities in post-conflict conditions where ruins and abandoned sites are both opportunities for play and sources of danger. To address this limitation, the thesis integrates Ward’s descriptive insights with Trauma-Informed Design (TID), which provides prescriptive principles of safety, predictability, sensory regulation, and emotional support. While TID offers pathways toward recovery, its applications have been limited within child-centred post-conflict urban settings. The synthesis of these two perspectives produces the concept of Protected Looseness, an approach that retains the openness, improvisation, and exploratory qualities of residual spaces while embedding layered protection and trauma-sensitive spatial cues. Through this combined framework, the thesis repositions post-conflict urban fragments as settings where children can safely explore, regain agency, and gradually reintegrate into community life. The research contributes design criteria and spatial strategies that support recovery, familiarity, and autonomy, advancing architectural approaches for children in war-damaged environments.
