Abstract

East Java Province has experienced urban expansion and increasing economic activity, particularly in coastal areas, which have increased water demand and pressure on land use and water resources. Variations in geology, hydrogeology, land use, and groundwater utilization may contribute to regional differences in surface deformation and groundwater storage. This study aims to characterize both phenomena and evaluate their temporal relationship during 2019–2024. Surface deformation was analyzed using Sentinel-1 time series InSAR based on LiCSBAS, whereas groundwater storage anomaly (GWSA) was estimated from downscaled GRACE-FO terrestrial water storage anomaly after subtracting the GLDAS hydrological components. The temporal relationship was analyzed using Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) and Pearson correlation across ten analysis areas. The InSAR results showed LOS velocities ranging from to 58.14 mm/year in mainland East Java and from to 12.87 mm/year in Madura, with LOS subsidence more pronounced in northern, urban, and coastal areas. GWSA showed heterogeneous patterns with a regional increasing trend of 0.67 cm/year. The CHIRPS–GWSA analysis produced a similarity coefficient of 0.78 and a mean lag of 3.96 months, whereas the GWSA–InSAR analysis produced similarity coefficients of 0.66–0.81, average lags of 0.75–4.09 months, and Pearson correlations ranging from to 0.03. These results indicate delayed temporal similarity rather than a direct linear relationship. Their interpretation should consider spatial resolution, hydrogeological conditions, and other local sources of surface deformation.
