Abstract

Tenun Sumba merupakan wastra Nusantara yang memiliki nilai simbolik mendalam pada setiap motifnya, yang merepresentasikan identitas, kepercayaan, dan struktur sosial masyarakat Sumba. Namun, dalam pengembangan produk kontemporer, tenun tradisional seringkali hanya dimanfaatkan sebagai elemen estetis tanpa mengolah makna budayanya secara menyeluruh. Perancangan ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan tas berbasis tenun Sumba melalui pendekatan semiotika dalam mentranslasikan makna motif ke dalam bentuk dan struktur produk. Nilai simbolik motif tidak hanya ditampilkan secara visual, tetapi diolah sebagai dasar pembentukan desain sehingga tas berfungsi sebagai medium representasi budaya. Melalui pendekatan ini, perancangan diharapkan dapat menghadirkan alternatif pengembangan produk berbasis wastra yang menempatkan makna budaya sebagai fondasi utama proses desain.

Sumba weaving is an Indonesian traditional textile that carries deep symbolic meanings within its motifs, representing identity, belief systems, and social structures of the Sumba community. However, in contemporary product development, traditional textiles are often used merely as aesthetic elements without fully exploring their cultural meanings. This study aims to design a bag based on Sumba weaving through a semiotic approach by translating motif meanings into the form and structure of the product. The symbolic values of the motifs are not only presented visually but are also utilized as the foundation of the design, allowing the bag to function as a medium of cultural representation. Through this approach, the design is expected to offer an alternative development of textile-based products that places cultural meaning as the core of the design process.
