Abstract

Rubbing in the compressor section of the GE Frame 5 (MS5001PA) Gas Turbine is one of the issues that can affect the reliability and performance of the turbine. This study aims to identify the root causes of rubbing in compressor stages 4–9 based on the results of the Major Inspection. The analysis was conducted through a literature review, field observations, inspection data collection, and root cause analysis using a fishbone diagram. The analyzed data included compressor rotor clearance measurements, run-out measurements, visual inspection records, and the unit maintenance history. The results indicate that the rubbing was not caused by a single factor but by a combination of several factors, including indications of static misalignment that had existed since the previous Major Overhaul, deformation of the compressor AFT casing, and rotor bow due to prolonged downtime. In addition, the inspection results showed that the unit had a history of narrow clearances since the previous Major Overhaul, which increased the potential for contact between the rotor and stator. Based on the analysis, it is recommended to replace the compressor AFT casing or perform grinding under the supervision of a Technical Field Advisor (TFA), depending on the component condition and inspection results.
