Abstract

Benowo Landfill, Surabaya, has the potential to generate leachate that may contaminate soil and groundwater through subsurface infiltration. This study aims to identify and analyze the distribution pattern of subsurface leachate within the Benowo Landfill area, Surabaya, based on the interpretation of magnetic field anomalies. Magnetic data were acquired along seven survey lines using the looping method. The observed data were corrected for the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) and diurnal variations, and subsequently processed using Total Magnetic Intensity (TMI), Reduction to the Pole (RTP), Upward Continuation, Vertical Gradient, Horizontal Gradient, and Analytic Signal techniques. Quantitative interpretation was performed using a nonlinear inversion approach based on the Flower Pollination Algorithm (FPA). The results indicate that the subsurface leachate distribution is predominantly concentrated in the eastern part of the study area, as evidenced by low magnetic anomaly zones identified from the interpretation of the Vertical Gradient, Horizontal Gradient, and Analytic Signal maps. The total magnetic anomaly ranges from −11,000 nT to 13,000 nT, while the RTP anomaly ranges from −26,000 nT to 24,000 nT. Upward Continuation at an elevation of 150 m provided the most representative separation between local and regional anomalies. The inversion results using the Flower Pollination Algorithm yielded a misfit value of 15,4342 for Profile 1, corresponding to an anomaly source depth of 2.29 m, and a misfit value of 0.9107 for Profile 2, corresponding to an anomaly source depth of 14.25 m. Based on the qualitative and quantitative interpretations, the magnetic method proved to be effective for identifying and analyzing the distribution pattern of subsurface leachate at the Benowo Landfill in a non-invasive manner.
