Abstract

The Phinisi ship is an Indonesian maritime cultural heritage originating from the Bugis community of South Sulawesi and was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017. Along with the rapid growth of the premium marine tourism industry, Phinisi ships have been transformed into luxury liveaboard vessels that offer exclusive sailing experiences for both domestic and international tourists. However, this transformation has not been accompanied by the comprehensive integration of Bugis cultural identity into the interior design. Most contemporary Phinisi interiors adopt international design styles, causing local cultural values to be represented only as decorative elements rather than creating a meaningful cultural experience. This design project aims to develop a Phinisi ship interior by integrating the concepts of Tropical Design, Luxury Cruise, and Bugis Culture to create spaces that represent local cultural identity, provide an authentic user experience, and meet the demands of premium marine tourism. The design process was conducted through primary research, including field observations and interviews with Phinisi ship owners, captains, and designers, as well as secondary research through literature reviews, scientific journals, maritime regulations, ergonomic standards, and benchmarking of similar tourism vessels. The collected data were analyzed to formulate the design concept, develop design alternatives, and implement the final design across various ship spaces, including the lounge area, dining area, diving deck, deluxe room, suite room, bridge, bar area, and corridor. The final design demonstrates that the application of natural materials, tropical color palettes, Lipa Sabbe motifs, Bugis cultural elements, warm lighting, and a storytelling approach successfully creates a strong spatial identity while delivering an authentic cultural experience that enhances the character of a premium tourism vessel. This project is expected to serve as a reference for future Phinisi interior design developments by integrating local cultural preservation with the evolving demands of the premium marine tourism industry.
