Abstract

Floating Photovoltaic (FPV) technology utilizes water surfaces by mounting solar panels above the water, thereby conserving land use and improving operational efficiency. However, existing FPV installations, including the Cirata Floating Solar Power Plant, still employ a fixed-tilt configuration, which limits the ability to capture solar irradiation optimally throughout the day. Solar tracking systems have been proven effective in enhancing panel performance, yet they introduce mechanical complexity and high maintenance costs. Consequently, this study examines three tilt angle variations to evaluate the most optimal angular configuration. Beyond tilt angle optimization, another design parameter that is often overlooked is the vertical distance between the panel and the water surface, which directly affects the module's operating temperature. This research was conducted in several stages, beginning with a literature review, followed by the design of a device capable of adjusting both tilt angle orientation and module height. The fabricated device was then tested under two primary variations: tilt angles of 5°, 10°, and 15°, and vertical heights of 250 mm, 500 mm, and 750 mm above the water surface. The study employed an experimental method carried out at Graha ITS Lake from May to June 2026, with data collection conducted between 09:00 and 15:00 local time at 30-minute intervals under clear weather conditions. Based on the experimental results, increasing the module height effectively reduced the solar panel's operating temperature. Tilt angle variations in the range of 5° to 15° exhibited a smaller influence compared to height variations; however, a consistent downward temperature trend was still observed with increasing tilt angle, with differences of approximately 1 to 2°C, and the 15° tilt angle yielded the best performance due to a smaller angle of incidence during the testing period. The 750 mm height produced optimal thermal conditions, with the underside temperature measuring 1 to 3°C lower than the panel surface temperature, while the 500 mm height resulted in minimal temperature differences between both sides, and the 250 mm height indicated a heat trap phenomenon where the underside temperature was 2 to 5°C higher than the surface temperature. The same pattern was observed in power output and conversion efficiency, where performance rankings consistently followed the inverse order of operating temperatures. The best-performing configuration was the 15° tilt angle at 750 mm height, yielding surface and underside temperatures of 43.79°C and 42.28°C, an average daily power output of 123.2 W, and a mean conversion efficiency of 19.79%.
