Abstract

A tourism village is a form of community-based tourism development that plays a role in improving community welfare while preserving local assets. Batu City possesses diverse tourism village potential, with each village featuring distinct constituent components; therefore, identifying these characteristics and establishing a typology is essential for planning their development. This study aims to identify the characteristics of the components that constitute tourism villages in Batu City, determine the level of importance of each component, and formulate a typology of tourism villages based on similarities in their constituent characteristics. The study employs a rationalistic approach using a mixed-methods design. Data collection was conducted through field observations, interviews, documentation, and literature reviews. Analytical methods included the Delphi technique to reach a consensus on the constituent components of tourism villages, the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to determine the importance level of each variable, scoring analysis to assess the development level of these components, and a synthesis of characteristics to categorize the villages based on similarities in their constituent elements. The results of the study show that the components of forming a tourist village in Batu City consist of seven indicators and thirteen variables that have reached consensus through Delphi analysis. The results of the AHP weighting show that the variables of cultural and environmental preservation efforts, promotional media, and the level of community participation are the variables with the highest level of importance in the formation of tourist villages. Based on the results of the characteristic synthesis, tourist villages in Batu City are grouped into five typologies based on the similarity of characteristics of the components that form a tourist village. Each typology shows different characteristics in terms of the usefulness of the tourism sector, tourist attractions, accessibility, amenities, institutional and community participation, promotion, and sustainability. These differences in characteristics show that the development of tourism villages in Batu City requires a different approach to each typology so that development policies and programs can be prepared in a more targeted manner according to the characteristics of each tourism village group.
