Abstract

In multi-story building projects, formwork operations influence concrete quality, the duration of structural work, implementation cost, and material waste. Under existing conditions, the project employs conventional formwork, which requires on-site fabrication, results in a relatively longer duration, and has the potential to produce less uniform concrete surfaces along with a higher volume of material waste. Aluminium formwork is employed as an alternative,
as it utilizes modular panels with a knock-down system, can be reused repeatedly, produces a neater concrete surface, and accelerates the work cycle. This study aims to compare the implementation method, time, and cost of conventional formwork and aluminium formwork using a Building Information Modeling (BIM) approach. 3D BIM is used for modeling and quantity takeoff, while 4D BIM is used to integrate the model with the schedule and to visualize the implementation stages. Based on the assumption of an 8-hour working day, aluminium formwork requires 296 working days, whereas conventional formwork requires 331 working days, making it 35 days, or 10.57%, faster. In terms of cost, aluminium formwork requires IDR 74.668.862.574,87, while conventional formwork requires IDR 64.668.867.028,48, resulting in
a difference of IDR 9.999.995.546,38, or 7%. The results indicate that aluminium formwork is more effective in terms of time, whereas conventional formwork is more economical in terms of cost. The selection of method needs to take into account the time target, cost, degree of structural repetition, project conditions, labor availability, and material reuse.
