Abstract

Para-athletics serve as a vital avenue for individuals with disabilities to achieve sporting success and foster independence. However, visually impaired athletes face a high risk of injury particularly to the lower limbs due to balance, posture, and gait issues stemming from visual limitations. This study aims to design a 3D-printed running shoe upper using Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) to enhance biomechanical stability, comfort, and running economy for T12-classified visually impaired para-athletes. The methodology employed includes a literature review, questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and analyses using Personas, Empathy Maps, and Customer Journey Mapping to understand user needs. The design process integrates Emotional Design theory and incorporates tactile identification features to enable users to independently determine shoe orientation. The study resulted in a running shoe prototype that prioritizes stability, protection, breathability, and ease of use, with the aim of improving running performance, reducing injury risk, and supporting the independence of visually impaired athletes.
