Abstract

As electricity demand is increasing by 1.3% per year with fossil fuels, producing approximately 1.9 gigatons of CO₂ emissions. Renewable as the primary alternative to fossil fuels, with marine energy being particularly promising because 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water. As an archipelagic nation, Indonesia has marine current energy potential of 17,989 MW. However, many Indonesian sites such as the Toyapakeh Strait and the coast off Bengkulu exhibit relatively low current speeds 0.57 m/s and 0.22 m/s, respectively. This condition can be addressed using a vertical-axis Savonius turbine, with a modification that is studied on this experiment. The modification is applying three groove shaped surface which is Scallop, Vertical, and Horizontal. This modification affecting the Ct, Cp and self-start gained by the turbine. Vertical modification increasing Ct and Cp gain while horizontal and scallop modification reducing thoose aspect. On the other hand, the RPM average gained on the self-start test, increased with vertical modification while the scallop and horizontal modification reducing it’s gained RPM average with faster flow to gain the self-start.
