Abstract

Aquaponic systems face the challenge of ammonia (NH₃) accumulation, which is toxic to fish. Microalgae offer an adaptive phytoremediation solution, as they can directly assimilate ammonia as a nitrogen source for growth and the synthesis of high-value biomolecules such as fatty acids. This study aims to determine the effect of ammonia addition on the fatty acid profile and bioremediation capacity of H. pluvialis, C. vulgaris, and S. platensis. The research method employed a one-factor completely randomized design (CRD) with four levels of ammonia concentration (control, 10 ppm, 20 ppm, and 30 ppm). The parameters observed included cell density, dry biomass, and fatty acid profile analysis using GC-MS. The results of the study showed that the optimal response for each parameter varied among species depending on the treatment applied. The highest cell growth and dry biomass accumulation for all three species were obtained in the control treatment. S. platensis produced the highest cell density of 460,000 cells/mL, the highest dry biomass of 18.67 mg/L, and the highest total fatty acid content of 7.246% in the control treatment. The highest bioremediation efficiency for S. platensis was achieved in the 10 ppm treatment at 82.30%. H. pluvialis produced the highest cell density of 600,000 cells/mL, the highest dry biomass of 20 mg/L, and the highest total fatty acid content of 53.582% in the control treatment. The highest bioremediation efficiency of H. pluvialis was obtained at the 10 ppm treatment level, at 85.68%. Meanwhile, C. vulgaris produced the highest cell density of 430,000 cells/mL and the highest dry biomass of 14 mg/L in the control treatment, however, the highest total fatty acid content was obtained in the 30 ppm ammonia treatment at 15.457%, along with the highest bioremediation efficiency of 66.30%.
