Abstract

High-Voltage Consumer LBI experiences limitations in power supply and is therefore supplied through the 20 kV distribution network from Kopo Substation. The existing settings indicate that the Time Dial Setting (TDS) of the relays, which is still determined using the conventional grading method, is unable to provide adequate Coordination Time Interval (CTI) for several primary and backup relay pairs. Therefore, to improve relay coordination and optimize the TDS settings at Kopo Substation, protection coordination optimization is required, particularly for overcurrent relays (OCR), so that the protection system can operate selectively and reliably. This study applies the Modified Adaptive Particle Swarm Optimization (MAPSO) method to the dominant coordination path of the KTT LBI supply system. The research stages include network system modelling based on the Single Line Diagram (SLD), selection of the coordination circuit, collection of system data, and protection planning. The collected system data are used as input parameters in the TDS optimization process using MAPSO. The optimization is carried out under two relay curve characteristic scenarios: Standard Inverse (SI), which is used as a comparison against the existing settings, and Extremely Inverse (EI), which is used as the recommended scenario. In addition, standard Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is used as a benchmark to evaluate the consistency of the MAPSO results against its basic comparative algorithm. The optimization results are then validated through Time-Current Characteristic (TCC) simulations using ETAP software to ensure that the proposed settings maintain the relay operating sequence from the downstream side to the upstream side and satisfy the selectivity principle for the main coordination pairs. The results show that the application of MAPSO can produce more selective protection coordination with fault-clearing times that comply with protection requirements. This study is also expected to contribute to PT PLN (Persero) UID Banten by providing a recommended protection coordination setting for the power supply to KTT LBI.
